Let’s Honor our Differences and Embrace our Commonalities – 12.12.12 at 12:12 pm

Let’s Honor our Differences and Embrace our Commonalities

We want to remind you how important it is to honor our differences, and embrace what we have in common instead of fearing each other.

This is now the time for humanity to focus more on what we have in common, than to allow ourselves to continue to be divided by our differences.

The conflicts that we are witnessing, all over the world, have their origins in our perceiving others as different from ourselves. The struggles in the Middle East, in Egypt, in Syria, in Myanmar, even the recent election here in the United States, are rooted in allowing others to state the terms of whether we create cohesiveness or divisiveness in our societies.

Banner EB eNewsletter October 2012 C

We’ve noticed during our extensive travels the last few years, that although most people have good hearts and good intentions, so many are using both hands to hold their own lives together, holding up their own world, that they feel their burdens are so overwhelming they can’t extend a hand to help another in need for fear their problems will come crashing down around them.

Donald and I are here as Re-Minders, and as Donald likes to say,’ Many hands make light work.’

When we focus on our differences, it generates fear, and when we focus on the commonalities of humanity we can generate love. There are only two emotions, from which all other emotions arise: fear and love. Ask yourself, which state of being would you rather cultivate? We attract that which we focus on, and then that becomes our beingness.

Your mind is the fertile field in which these seeds take root, and the thoughts and emotions of fear, worry and doubt are the pesticides of your garden.

So be still, breathe and till the soil of your garden with love and plants the seeds of abundance: breathe peace, breathe tolerance, breathe happiness, breathe joy; for yourself, for your family, for your loved ones, for your community, for your nation, and for our world. You are the gardener of your life experience.

Uplift each and every person on this planet, with the same innate reflex as a flower stretching to reach the rays of the sun, expand yourself outward to include all, with the intention of love, peace, understanding, cooperation and abundance.

Create your future, one thought at a time.

“The underlying foundational structure of the human body is water, each person is an individual drop of water, and as we are an inseparable part of this vast ocean of humanity it is impossible to remove these drops from the ocean.” Bryan Singleton

Boulder Rocked at Shine! Powerful healing co-created for humanity

Connecting to one’s true nature of being, with open hearts and receptive minds.

Last night we co-created a wave/particle of extraordinary healing energy at Shine Restaurant and Gathering Space, in Boulder, with some fantastic, powerful visionaries! As the energies got more powerful the crowd in the smallish room got bigger, and by the end there were about 50 people with one exquisite intention: connecting with the entire world for profound healing, love and happiness.

Thought precedes form, and like many ripples moving outward through the vast ocean of consciousness, the light and love blanketed the world, and settled into hearts in all countries. From one drop (thought-intention), many drops are created, and these resonated with the highest frequencies of love and healing.

Donald explained that we don’t consider ourselves teachers, as we’ve moved beyond that phase, we are Re-Minders, we are here to remind people of their true nature of being.

In fact, Donald and I no longer use the word Master before our names, this is because the title Master connotes that we are above others. ‘Master’ creates the illusion that we have special powers or knowledge that others do not, and we know that to not be true. These powers often remain latent in others and just need the spark of inspiration to be ignited. We feel an urgency to empower everyone we come into contact with to possess self-mastery, to believe in themselves and the higher power of their own minds.

This is a time of accelerated evolution for humanity. Consider the computer, which is called an electronic brain. Computers were developed in the 1950’s, and were stand-alone data processing and storage units. By 1986 the Internet, as we know it today, was born. We have the power to access instantaneously the limitless information that exists globally. And if you have a laptop or a smartphone, which almost everyone in the world does, you have access to more wisdom, knowledge and information than was contained in the great libraries of the ancient world, including the Royal Library of Alexandria and the Imperial Library of Constantinople. Now information is no longer just in the hands of the elite, the ruling classes, it available to everyone.

All of this happened because of thought, the intentions and actions of men and women who dedicated their lives, energies and resources to build the electronic brain, ie the computer. Because of these visionaries, humanity has reconnected with the lost art of wisdom and knowledge. We are truly connected on many deep levels, and Donald and I are here to re-mind humanity of this profound connection.

We are not stand-alone, isolated entities, we are connected to each other, and to Source, however you define Source (God, Jesus, the Tao, Enlightenment, etc.) Just like coral reefs, which are symbiotic colonies of living organisms (polyps) having an individual experience yet connected by the coral bed (when one polyp is either positively or negatively affected, the entire colony is affected), we are likewise connected to each other. Just like the coral reef, we view the human being as a living organism having an individual experience while connected to collective consciousness. Therefore, by raising the vibration of one, through cultivating and maintaining the highest frequency (the emotion of love), all in the world are positively affected. Love is the answer.

Humanity is being propelled into the most rapid evolutionary changes in recorded history. Now is a time of re-awakening, of being re-minded of our own true nature, our limitless potential. We find this to be an exciting, inspiring time to be alive, an honor and a blessing to witness and participate.

Last night, we cultivated love and healing through our Extraordinary Breath (intentional breathing) and qi cultivating practices, for all in the room, first directing them to do it for themselves, then for everyone else in the room, then spreading out into all of Boulder, then outward to all the towns around Boulder, outward to the entire state of Colorado, for our country, for the countries to the north and the south of our country, and finally for the entire world.

It was truly powerful and inspirational. Our deepest gratitude to the brilliant Adam Shapiro for hosting us, and the incomparable Jim MacRitchie, for understanding the importance of our work and tirelessly promoting the free community healing, and our upcoming Qigong Tui Na workshop. And our deepest thanks to my sister the poet/artist KayAnne Solem, and my brother-in-law, Tai Chi Chuan teacher Dennis Solem, for rallying their friends and colleagues to participate in this beautiful event.

We are honored to connect with Jim MacRitchie,  is one of the greatest pioneers of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qigong in America. It is through his efforts thirty years ago that acupuncture was recognized and legalized in the state of Colorado, opening the way for the thousands of practitioners who have graduated from the TCM schools of Colorado.

We are delighted that our colleague and friend Anthony Guilbert’s schedule opened up, and so was able to join us. Anthony is among the new generation of mind/body thought leaders, a rising star in the American Taoist culture.

With these visionaries, and many others in the audience, magic was created and we all floated on clouds of bliss for the rest of the evening. We are still feeling it this morning.

Please join us in creating magic around the world. Here’s a link to our schedule of upcoming events: workshops, retreats and free community healing: ASustainableBalance.com.

You can support this important global healing work by making tax-deductible donations (click here for the secure link to make a donation), or by purchasing our divinely inspired artwork to grace your walls with extraordinary healing energy (click here for the Artwork) or our eBooks, Primordial Qigong and Extraordinary Breath, available on our websites Primordial Qigong and ASustainableBalance.

Bless you, and may the healing and love we generated last night fill your life with limitless possibilities!

“But what about the children who are born with deformities and illnesses, or get cancer?”

During a recent day-long teaching that we had been invited to present to a new community, we encountered an interesting but not uncommon situation, although it was one that we had rarely experienced in our over thirty years of teaching others how to access their innate healing abilities through ancient, effective self-directed transformative arts.

After the morning session broke for lunch, two or three people posed some rhetorical questions to each other: “But what about the children that are born with deformities or illnesses, or who get cancer? How can what he is teaching really work, when there are people who die every day or suffer terribly from conditions beyond their control?”

They were, and are, good questions, but it seemed that they didn’t really want the answer because they left after lunch. In their confused state, they rejected our message of hope, healing, love, generosity and self-empowerment. “Love is the answer,” Donald said, repeatedly, during the morning session.

Donald had been talking about the power of thought, how focused positive intention, over a period of time, can create good changes in one’s life, and the world, if the belief system is there to reinforce and maintain the changes. He led the group through profound deep-breathing exercises and meditation practices to get them in touch with universal energies and discover their own limitless potential.

They must not have liked hearing that they have the power, and the responsibility, to control and direct their own minds and in doing so, could reap limitless positive rewards, in their own lives, in the lives of their loved ones, and in the world. They may have preferred to stay, as Donald had pointed out that many in the world are,‘comfortably numb.’

And so, to prove to themselves that our message could not possibly be true, or work for anyone, they chose to leave. But for those who came to our teaching that day with open hearts and receptive minds, the benefits they received will have lasting, positive effects in their lives. They recognized the truth of it, and in that recognition they understood how to change the old programming (negative thoughts, behaviors and beliefs) that no longer served their highest will and good.

Donald did address this question, quite eloquently and compassionately in his teachings later that afternoon, and I wish those who left could have heard it. Maybe they would have understood.

He said, “Some of you, during the lunch break, posed the question, well, what about children that get cancer, or other illnesses, and can’t use the power of their minds to heal themselves? I understand why you asked that. Please remember, I’m just a messenger here, I’m not God and there are some things that not even I can explain.  But in the last hundred years, there have been unthinkable advances in medical care, for example children that would have died at birth back then have the chance to live and to thrive. These breakthroughs come from the power of thought, from the minds of the doctors and scientists who say, there has to be a better way. So, yes, you ALL have the power to change your own reality, through controlling and directing your own minds.”

It is in the state of believing in ourselves that we create a positive future.  When we are in the state of doubt, we default back to dysfunctional programming.

John 20:29. Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Qigong Tui Na – Gentle techniqes and methods

We winced as we watched the patient on the video squirming in obvious discomfort while the practitioner applied force and torque to her torso and various limbs as she lay on the table. The voice-over of the practitioner was telling us about his method and the positive results he was achieving in this patient, and many others, with his forceful Tui Na techniques.

We saw this video at a Traditional Chinese Medicine conference, while we were presenting our Five Element Balancing Qigong workshop, and this was but one of several videos shown by different presenters. We noted that all the patients featured in these videos showed signs of mild to extreme discomfort. The practitioners who were showing these videos claimed 100% positive results by the use of force or violence from the afflictions suffered by their patients.

We’re not claiming that hard Tui Na techniques are not good, and shouldn’t be used, in fact some of our teachers did incorporate the more forceful applications along with the lighter-touch hand techniques.

However, our philosophy is to treat our patients as we would treat our mothers, or a baby. You can get the same, and sometimes even superior, results from the gentle, painless Tui Na methods, techniques and mind-training exercises in our soon-to-be published eBook.  These methods are based on our decades-long immersion in the martial, healing and meditation arts, and are time-tested and effective.

Donald and I have been blessed to participate in, and even to be the catalyst for, many miracles….

Donald and I have been blessed to participate in, and even to be the catalyst for, many miracles, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of our families, friends, students and clients.

We set our intention for specific outcomes, and more often than not this reality unfolds before our eyes.

Twelve years ago, one of our very dear longtime friends, Norman Schwartz, a Wall Street whiz, was walking his dog in the early New York City springtime when he slipped on black ice and broke his leg. The fracture was very bad, and while still in the hospital he developed compartment syndrome. His doctors were considering amputating his leg, as the swelling was quite severe, and getting worse. Donald flew there immediately, and stayed by Norman’s side performing healing prayers and rituals until Norman was released from the hospital with his leg intact.

It took Norman quite a while to heal completely from this injury, and Donald and I flew several times to New York to be with him and do healing work on him. During one long, particularly powerful meditation/prayer/ healing session in Norman’s twelfth-story apartment in late spring, we glanced out the plate-glass windows and saw, although the sky was blue all around the city, snowflakes falling but only over Norman’s apartment building!

Not long after this, Norman called us from his hospital bed, telling us the doctors said he was dying from osteomyelitis in his leg and a stubborn high fever, several days of antibiotics were not working, and he begged us to come see him and save him from dying. We flew in the very next day, and the moment we walked into his hospital room his fever started to go down, and the infection started to recede. His girlfriend and the doctors attributed it to the antibiotics finally kicking in, but we knew in our hearts that his belief in us, and our belief in our healing abilities, brought Norman back to recovery.

In mid-2000, Donald’s mother, Maria, was diagnosed with uterine cancer at Montefiore Hospital, in the Bronx, New York. A sweet, seemingly delicate woman, Maria didn’t believe she was sick, and she went to doctor’s appointments only reluctantly. For the next year, Donald traveled to the Bronx every six weeks to spend a week or two with his mother, doing bio-energy healing work on her. Her extensive tests from Montefiore showed that the cancer had metastasized to her lymph system, pancreas and liver. Donald took her to the top cancer hospital in New York City, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, where a noted oncologist agreed to see her. More tests were done on Maria that confirmed the findings at Montefiore, and it was noted by Maria’s doctor that her uterus looked shrunken and diseased. Finally, surgery was scheduled, and Donald sat in the family waiting room, deep in meditation, ‘seeing’ his mother free of cancer and mentally guiding the surgeon’s hands.

After the operation, the doctor came out to talk with the family. She was practically in shock and mumbling to herself, “I don’t understand, I don’t understand.” Donald asked her about his mother, was she okay? The doctor said, “Your mother is in the recovery room. But I don’t understand.  I just took the uterus of a seventeen year old out of your mother. So I had to go and review the tests that were done at Montefiore and here at Sloan-Kettering. Those tests clearly showed that there was cancer present, and that it had metastasized. I just did biopsies of the organs, and I am very puzzled because I couldn’t find any cancer! Your mother does not need chemo or radiation, and in fact, I’m sorry to say the surgery itself was not required.” Donald told her, “As long as my mother is okay, what we’ve experienced is nothing short of miraculous. Thank you for your role in this miracle!”

Maria continues to live cancer free to this day.

Harnessing the power of happiness, mindfulness, and personal strength

Blue Lotus, Central Park, New York

From Harvard Medical School, Harvard Health Publications:

Want to improve your health? Start by focusing on the things that bring you happiness. There is some scientific evidence that positive emotions can
help make your life longer and healthier.

But to produce good health, positive emotions may need to be long-term. In other words, thinking positive thoughts for a month when you already haveheart disease won’t cure the disease. But lowering your stress levels over a period of years with a positive outlook and relaxation techniques could reduce your risk of heart problems.

Pathways to happiness

In an early phase of positive psychology research, University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson of the
University of Michigan chose three pathways to examine:

Feeling good. Seeking pleasurable emotions and sensations, from the hedonistic model of happiness put forth by Epicurus, which focused on reaching happiness by maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain.

Engaging fully. Pursuing activities that engage you fully, from the influential research by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. For decades, Csikszentmihalyi
explored people’s satisfaction in their everyday activities, finding that people report the greatest satisfaction when they are totally immersed in and
concentrating on what they are doing — he dubbed this state of intense absorption “flow.”

Doing good. Searching for meaning outside yourself, tracing back to Aristotle’s notion of eudemonia, which emphasized knowing your true self and acting in accordance with your virtues.

Through focus groups and testing hundreds of volunteers, they found that each of these pathways individually contributes to life satisfaction.

Things that won’t make you happy

People tend to be poor judges of what will make them happy. While most people say they want to be happy, they often believe in myths or carry
assumptions that actually get in the way. Here are some widely held myths about what will bring happiness:

Money and material things. The question of whether money can buy happiness has, for more than 30 years, been addressed by the “Easterlin
paradox,” a concept developed by economist Richard Easterlin. His research showed that people in poor countries are happier when their basic necessities are covered. But any money beyond that doesn’t make much difference in happiness level. This idea has been challenged periodically, as in 2008 when two University of Pennsylvania researchers analyzed Gallup poll data from around the world. They showed, in contrast to Easterlin’s work, that people in wealthier countries are happier in general. The two studies were not directly comparable in method, however. And Easterlin points out that the new study may be flawed by cultural bias, as people from different countries may have different ways of answering questions about wealth and happiness.

Youth. Being young and physically attractive has little or no bearing on happiness. In a study published by Richard Easterlin in 2006 in the
Journal of Economic Psychology, not only did being young fail to contribute to happiness, but adults grew steadily happier as they moved into and through middle age. After that, happiness levels began to decline slowly as health problems and other life problems emerged.

Children. Children can be a tremendous source of joy and fulfillment, but their day-to-day care is quite demanding and can increase stress, financial pressures, and marital strife. When ranking their happiness during daily activities, mothers report being more happy eating, exercising,
shopping, napping, or watching TV than when spending time with their children. In several studies, marital satisfaction declines after the first child is born and only recovers after the last child leaves home. Personal relationships of all types are important, however. In studies, being married, having more friends, and having sexual intercourse more often are all moderately or strongly associated with happiness.

How do you know if you’re in flow?

You lose awareness of time. You aren’t watching the clock, and hours can pass like minutes. As filmmaker George Lucas puts it, talent is “a
combination of something you love a great deal and something you can lose yourself in — something that you can start at 9 o’clock, look up from your work and it’s 10 o’clock at night … .”

You aren’t thinking about yourself. You aren’t focused on your comfort, and you aren’t wondering how you look or how your actions will be perceived by others. Your awareness of yourself is only in relation to the activity itself, such as your fingers on a piano keyboard, or the way you position a knife to cut vegetables, or the balance of your body parts as you ski or surf.

You aren’t interrupted by extraneous thoughts. You aren’t thinking about such mundane matters as your shopping list or what to wear tomorrow.

You are active. Flow activities aren’t passive, and you have some control over what you are doing.

You work effortlessly. Flow activities require effort (usually more effort than involved in typical daily experience). Although you may be working
harder than usual, at flow moments everything is “clicking” and feels almost effortless.

Harnessing the power of happiness, mindfulness, and personal strength

Positive emotions have been linked with better health, longer life, and greater well-being in numerous scientific studies. On the other hand, chronic anger, worry, and hostility increase the risk of developing heart disease, as people react to these feelings with raised blood pressure and stiffening of blood vessels. But it isn’t easy to maintain a healthy, positive emotional state. People often misjudge what will make them happy and content.

This report was prepared by the editors of Harvard Health Publications in consultation with Ronald D. Siegel, Psy.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology, Harvard Medical School, and clinical psychologist Steven M. Allison, Psy.D. 37 pages. (2011)

Health and Fitness in the Swiss Alps

Shao Lin Chuan in Scuol, Switzerland

We just completed the first session of our annual Rubbo Retreat in Switzerland, and we are so delighted to be creating magic with our Swiss students once again.

We’ve got a great group here, it’s a joy to share our wisdom with open hearts and receptive minds.

There’s a great range of ages practicing the aerobic martial art Shao Lin Chuan with us, from 25 to 75.  Although Shao Lin is traditionally taught to young people, we believe that anyone can do this health-enhancing system and have watched with joy as our students who are seniors move with grace, confidence and power across the court.

Of course we’ve included our breathing exercises in this retreat. Scuol is at 4,000 feet, and deep breathing exercises done at this altitude will increase lung capacity for not just here (leading to greater health, endurance, clarity of mind, power and effortless energy) but for the lower elevations also.

Elaine, Frank and Mikko doing Chinese pushups

The Shao Lin Chuan Group!

The second session of our retreat began this morning, Awakening the Inner Healer ( Erwecke Deine innere Heilkraft). We are all healers, and at this session we are teaching how to cultivate and express your innate healing abilities. We’ve noticed big shifts already in our retreatants, such a delight to facilitate those aha! moments.

We usually give a name to our tours, previously we had the Rubbo Magical Mystery Tour (a spiritual journey to India, Nepal and Thailand in early 2010), the Rubbo Love is the Answer Teaching Tour (last year in Europe).

We were waiting for the universe to indicate the name for this current teaching tour, and it came to us a few days ago: The Rubbo Limitless Love and Gratitude Teaching Tour. We are infusing our all of our teachings with love and gratitude and transmitting to all of our students the felt-sensations of limitless love and gratitude, for them to appreciate all of the blessings each of us receive, from the universe, from our families and friends, from our communities and from the world.

Peter Max’s painting of Donald’s father, Don Rubbo

Several years ago we heard that Peter Max would be signing copies of his new book of paintings at a Borders store in San Jose. I insisted to Donald that we go to the book signing.

We drove down to the Borders store and purchased a copy of the book, and then stood in a long line. One of the employees announced that if you wanted Peter Max to sign the book to a particular person, to write the name of that person on a slip of paper.

We wrote down ‘Don Rubbo’ on a piece of paper. We know that Peter Max hadn’t seen that name in many, many years.

In 1962, Peter Max, Tom Daly and their mentor Don Rubbo started a small Manhattan arts studio together, the Daly & Max Studio. Although his name wasn’t listed, Don Rubbo joked that he was the ampersand in Daly & Max Studio.  In 1963, Daly, Max and Rubbo did the illustration, design and color for Helga Sandburg’s (the daughter of poet Carl Sandburg) children’s book Joel and the Wild Goose. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Rubbo)

At the book signing, we waited patiently for our turn, inching slowly up to the table where Peter Max sat hunched over the books as he was signing them. He rarely looked up, only glancing over at the slips of paper and writing a quick inscription.  Finally we reached the table, slid our book to him and placed the piece of paper with ‘Don Rubbo’ on top of the book.

He stared at the piece of paper for a few moments, and then looked up at Donald with a big smile. He leaped over the table and grabbed Donald in a bear hug, exclaiming, “Your father taught us all!”

As the long line of people watched, Peter and Donald were engaged in a lengthy conversation, and finally Peter said to Donald, “Send me a photo of your dad, and I will make a painting of him for you!”

Several years passed, and recently I emailed him again, gently reminding him of his offer, and saying how much it would mean to Donald to receive the painting. I sent again a photo, one that Don Rubbo had taken of himself sitting with his sons, with Donald just behind his shoulder.

Peter’s assistant called me, and said she thought the photo was so exquisite, and that Peter would be creating a painting for Donald and that it would be shipped soon. We were beyond excited, so thrilled and honored, and looking forward to seeing the painting.

It finally arrived, and it is truly a magnificent piece of art. We are deeply grateful to Peter, and as Donald examined the painting, he could feel the energy and love that Peter put into every brush stroke.

Thank you, Peter!
